Overview
The Friends of the Farmer’s Market (FFM), in coordination
with the Constructor’s Consortium (CC), invites designs for a mobile kitchen
unit (MKU). To this end, the one
successful design will be built and implemented locally and receive one gift
card from Best Buy for $100. Students
are invited to submit design proposals individually or as teams (sharing the
prize). This RFD reflects prioritized criteria
pertinent to a MKU as listed below.
Existing Parameters
Current donations toward the MKU include a gas range oven
(model name and number available upon request).
The MKU will need to be mobile, presumably through the use of a
trailer. The trailer system MUST be towed
with a standard towing package on a vehicle and fit within a compact car
parking space.
Materiality of the MKU
FFM will consider MORE favorably those proposals that
incorporate the following types of materials:
Ecological materials and products; Products involving sustainable
practices; Materials with highly-recycled content or that could be recyclable
and Commercial-grade parts that incorporate high durability standards.
Use of the MKU
FFM will consider MORE favorably those proposals that
incorporate the following uses and abilities:
Conduct cooking demonstrations; Conduct locality-based (public) food
events; Educate; Demonstrate nutrition; Involve local Head Start programs; Promote
locally- grown foods and as a Rental
unit. The MKU is to be primarily used
for the Blacksburg Farmer’s Market. However the FFM plans to periodically
rent it out for use by other local non-profits.
FFM encourages creative designs that increase the possibility of
multiple use scenarios in similar areas of the unit (for example, structure
that could provide areas to grow herbs).
FFM also envisions the possibility of multiple sections of the cooking
surfaces that move and easily connect or disconnect, depending on the use of
the MKU. The unit will need to be parked
in one compact car space and will need to have a cover and be secure-able. The MKU sink would be less for clean-up and
more for cooking (supply of potable water) and the capacity of the MKU is more
toward tastings than feeding large groups (catering would require the prep of
food off-site).
Aesthetics and Components of the MKU
FFM will consider MORE favorably those proposals that
incorporate the following aesthetics and components: Good visibility, openness of design; configurations
that offer higher visibility to the audience (mirrors?); Easy storage of the
MKU in a compact car unit parking space; Independent lighting; Food storage; Potable
water storage; Prep sink; Large natural gas stove unit; Under counter
refrigerator. The MKU should not be
limited to simply what works, but design should incorporate innovative uses,
materials, technologies and equipment that could be offered as an addition if
the funds were available.
Ability to Interact with the MKU
The MKU is to incorporate: High mobility; User- friendly
features; sustainable implications and an ability to easily interact with the
public.
Additional Criteria
1.
Proposals MUST contain a maintenance plan and
storage plan (a cover is not necessarily required, but is encouraged as part of
the design);
2.
Proposals MUST contain a detailed take-off and
cost estimate based on real costs (include sources);
3.
Proposals MUST contain a construction management
plan, including preliminary schedule, procurement details and safety concerns.
Budgetary Requirements
For budgetary concerns, please assume the following:
–
The Stove is donated (and must be considered
based on current dimensions);
–
Consider the trailer to be donated and NOT part
of your budget. You will still need to
decide on a trailer and specify it, using it as the basis for your design
criteria.
–
The total budget for materials and equipment of
the mobile kitchen is $5,000.00.
–
Please provide “upgrade packages” that could
introduce new technology or amenities deemed non-essential and list the cost and
procurement location for such items.
Proposal Format
Successful designs will include 2D CAD drawings at ¼”:1’
scale, properly labeled for materials and equipment, and written quality specifications based on
CSI Masterformat levels. Drawings MUST
include the following views: Plan, Transverse elevation, longitudinal elevation
and detailed section. 3D representations
are highly encouraged. The proposal must
include all additional criteria listed above.
A preliminary proposal presentation will be required for FFM review and
response. The format of the final
proposal should be written, include graphics, and be conveyed in PDF format.
